Using and caring for your SAM-I-AM! Nappies
Fitting the Cotton Nappy
- To adjust the nappy to fit your new-born baby put it
around the baby inside out (with the label and Velcro on the inside) and shorten the
length fold the top waist section down to not cover the umbilicus and fasten the Velcro
flaps snugly.
- The leg openings may be adjusted by fastening the
Velcro closure at an angle upwards to tighten the leg opening or downwards to enlarge the
leg opening.
- Be sure that all of the nappy (including the tags)
is fully covered by the pant to prevent clothing from getting wet.
Using and Washing your cotton nappies
Pre-wash the nappies twice before using for the
first time. This will soften the nappies and bring them to their maximum absorbency.
Soak printed nappies in a salt water solution
(5ml in a basin of water) prior to washing to set the dyes.
- Option 1 : After changing your babys
nappy place the wet or soiled nappy into a bucket filled 2/3 full of water with about 50ml
or 2-3tbls. of white vinegar. The vinegar will help to sterilise the nappy and reduce
smells. Instead of vinegar, you can also use some washing powder or other bleach-free
soaking powder in the soaking bucket. Nappy Fresh is a good alternative while Napisan
is to be avoided. I t is recommended to change the soaking solution every 2-3 days.
- Option 2 : If the nappy is just wet you can
store it in a dry bucket; eliminating the need to soak
- If you are out-and-about just pop the nappy into
your wet nappy bag and take home to store in your bucket.
- Wet biodegradable liners can be washed along
with the nappies a couple of times before they start to come apart. Soiled liners may be
flushed down the toilet, however it is always better to dispose of the liners in the
rubbish as opposed to the sewerage
- Before putting the nappies into your washing machine
turn the Velcro flaps inside-out to prevent the nappies clinging together.
- To transfer the nappies to your washing machine you
can use rubber gloves and hand wring the nappies. OR, you can pour the contents of the
bucket straight into the washing machine and use a rinse cycle first.
- Do not use BLEACH, detergents with bleach, pure soap
products or strong detergents to wash your nappies. Use a non-biological powder / liquid.
Fabric softeners are not recommended as they reduce the absorbency of the nappies.
- Wash the nappies on a 60° wash or higher.
- Hanging your nappies out to dry in the sun to dry
will let stains bleach away naturally. But stains can also be removed by rubbing a bar of
"white" soap onto a wetted-down stain.
- Care in drying your nappies will add to their life.
You can tumble dry your nappies but use a medium setting and then hang damp nappies out to
dry for the balance. Do not add softeners to the dryer.
Sam I Am Covers/Pants
- All pants should be worn with the labels on the outside
of the pant, not against the babys skin. For babies with tiny legs hand stitch the
spandex surrounding the leg openings to make them smaller (you can undo the stitches as
your baby grows)
- Sam I Am! Waterproof nylon pants can be
machine washed at 40° , OR can be rinsed in warm, soapy water and hung to dry. Waterproof
pants are ideal for night - time use and for extended wear.
- Sam I Am! Breathable nylon pants (with the
yellow stitching) should always be hand washed as it adds to their life. The breathable
pants are ideal for everyday use, the pants prevent moisture leaking out but also allow
the nappies to breath reducing heat irritation.
- Never put Sam I Am pants in the dryer.
Sam I Am! Inserts
- The inserts are for use overnight or for extended
daytime use
- For girls place the wide end to the back of the
nappy. For boys place the wide end to the front of the nappy, or fold in half and place in
the front.
- The inserts can be soaked and washed along with the
nappies.
Caring for your nappies as
detailed above will make them last for your next baby!
